FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does the Handy Beach umbrella anchor work?
Unlike traditional umbrellas that use plastic twist corkscrews, or heavy sandbags that require you to shovel up to 125 pounds of sand, Handy Beach Goods uses a subsurface anchoring system.
It features an integrated slide-hammer that drives a heavy-duty steel anchor 2 full feet deep into the sand in about 10 seconds. Because it locks vertically deep beneath the surface, the anchor pulls against the dense, packed sand column around it rather than relying on surface weight or friction.
- Fast Setup: Drives 24 inches deep in just 10 seconds.
- Wind-Tested: Meets the strict ASTM F3681 wind safety standard to withstand up to 30 MPH winds.
- Zero Hassle: Requires no digging, no kneeling, and no heavy sandbags. When you are done, it pulls out easily in 5 seconds.
Does this umbrella require digging or heavy sandbags to stay secure?
Not at all. The Handy Beach Umbrella is 100% sandbag-free. Our patented, built-in hammering mechanism drives the heavy-duty steel stake 2 feet into the sand in just 10 seconds. Whether you are in soft, packed, wet, or dry sand, it secures firmly without the need for digging or messy sandbags.
What wind speed does the Handy Beach Umbrella and Anchor System handle?
The system has been wind tunnel tested in winds up to 30 mph as per the wind tunnel test in ASTM F3681-24 (Safety Specification for Beach Umbrellas and Anchor Devices). The reason the umbrella was tested to 30 mph (as per the Standard requirements) is because wind gusts can be more than 3 times the prevailing wind and can take beachgoers by surprise. For reference, being on a beach in 30 mph winds is unpleasant as sand gets whipped up and personal items get blown around. Most people are likely to find 0-15 mph wind appropriate for beachgoing. Ultimately, our 30 mph rating gives you a peace of mind—when those unexpected coastal gusts kick up, you can relax knowing your umbrella isn't going anywhere.
What is ASTM-F3681-24?
ASTM F3681-24 is a safety standard that makes sure beach umbrellas stay securely anchored in windy conditions. It sets rules for how umbrellas and their anchors should be tested to prevent them from flying away and causing injuries. The wind tunnel test requires that a fully assembled umbrella must withstand wind speeds up to 30 miles per hour for 30 minutes without failing, tipping, or coming loose.
What are the installation instructions for my Handy Beach Umbrella & Anchor System?
Please adhere to the below installation instructions for your safety and comfort.
1. Place stake (bottom section) of the anchor on the beach terrain, open the bottom knob (twist anti-clockwise) to engage the internal hammering mechanism. Raise the shaft of the anchor by pulling it directly upwards before lowering it with force onto the stake. This continuous action will penetrate the beach terrain.
2. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the stake is fully submerged up to the neckline of the lower blue collar. Tighten the bottom knob to lock the hammer (twist clockwise). If the anchor pole wobbles after installation or the stake is not fully submerged it may not be secure. You should re-install.
3. Insert your canopy pole at least 6" into the anchor shaft (top section) to avoid damage to the top collar. Tighten the top knob (twist clockwise). Do not insert a canopy pole less than 1.1" in diameter as it will not be secured by the knob.
Is it easy to take down my Handy Beach Anchor if it grips so well?
Yes! Gently stir the top of anchor in the ground and then lift it up and out of the terrain. You won't need to kneel down or pull too hard.
Is this heavy-duty umbrella easy to carry?
Yes. To ensure superior stability and durability in coastal winds, we use heavy-duty materials. The umbrella canopy weighs 4.4 lbs and the solid steel anchor weighs 4.8 lbs, making the total system weight 9.2 lbs. Despite this rugged build, it is highly manageable and travel-ready. Everything packs effortlessly into the included premium carry bag with a padded shoulder strap, leaving your hands free for your cooler and beach chairs.
Why do you claim UPF 55+ if the industry limit is UPF 50+?
The ASTM D6603 standard caps retail labels at UPF 50+ to provide a consistent benchmark for consumers. However, independent lab testing of our materials showed a Mean UPF performance significantly higher than the standard. We use the term UPF 55+ Performance to accurately report these results, which confirm our fabric blocks 99.9% of UV radiation—providing a level of protection that significantly exceeds the standard requirement.
How is the Handy Beach Umbrella cooler than standard umbrellas?
Unlike traditional fabrics that absorb and radiate solar energy, our canopy features a reflective silver coating. This lining acts as a thermal barrier, bouncing both UV and infrared heat away from the shaded area. This "dual-action" protection prevents heat buildup, keeping the area under your umbrella up to 10°F cooler.
Is the Handy umbrella allowed on all beaches?
Yes. Unlike sail-style canopy shades which are banned on several popular beaches including Myrtle Beach SC and Rehoboth Beach DE, the Handy umbrella format is a traditional umbrella structure and is welcome on every public beach in the US. No restrictions, no surprises when you arrive.
How many people does it shade?
The 7ft canopy arc provides approximately 33 sq ft of effective shade — comfortable for 2 adults on towels or chairs or a small family. For groups who want more coverage, two Handy umbrellas together provide ~66 sq ft of shade at $299.98 — more coverage than sail-style shades, and comparable to a medium beach cabana — with the added benefit of working in any wind condition and being allowed on every US beach.
10-SECOND, SANDBAG-FREE SETUP
Set up your shade in just 10 seconds. This patented, built-in hammering mechanism eliminates all digging, twisting, and heavy sandbags. It's truly effortless and secures firmly in soft, hard, wet, or dry sand, making setup easy for anyone.
WIND-RESISTANT & SECURE
Our anchor is one of the few independently wind tunnel tested beach systems to pass the rigorous ASTM F-3681-24 Safety Specification, enduring wind speeds up to 30 mph. The reinforced 8mm rib design and wind-dissipating mesh provide superior aerodynamic flexibility and exceptional resistance.
(Always adhere to the product installation instructions, see FAQ section for more details).
BEST-IN-CLASS SUN & HEAT PROTECTION
Our unique UPF 55+ canopy, enhanced with a reflective silver coating, prevents heat buildup to keep you up to 10°F cooler. While the industry standard (ASTM D6603) caps official labels at UPF 50+, our materials are independently lab-tested to exceed these requirements, reaching a UPF 55+ performance level that blocks 99.9% of UV rays. This is achieved through our dual-action protection: high-density fabric and a silver lining that reflects heat away instead of absorbing it.
BUILT TO LAST
The heavy-duty 4.8 lb anchor, crafted from non-corrosive steel, is paired with durable 8mm fiberglass ribs. This is highly reliable, quality beach gear engineered for season-after-season use.
